Does Unexplained Mean an Extraordinary UFO Sound?

Introduction
An unexplained sound linked to a reported UFO is not, by itself, evidence of an extraordinary craft. In investigations of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), the word unidentified has a precise meaning: the available information is insufficient to determine the source. That is fundamentally different from demonstrating that the source lies beyond known technology or natural processes. Understanding this distinction is essential when evaluating reports of unusual humming, buzzing, roaring or other sounds. A missing explanation is an evidence gap, not positive evidence for an extraordinary claim.
Identified, unidentified and extraordinary claims
Confusion often arises because these three categories are treated as though they mean the same thing when they do not.
- Identified: Investigators can confidently attribute the sound to a known source, such as an aircraft, drone, atmospheric phenomenon, industrial equipment or another ordinary cause.
- Unidentified: The available evidence is too limited or contradictory to determine what produced the sound.
- Extraordinary: Reliable evidence demonstrates behaviour that cannot reasonably be explained by known natural phenomena, human technology or measurement error.
Only the third category would justify claims that something genuinely exceptional has occurred. Merely remaining in the second category does not move a case closer to the third.
This distinction is reflected in current UAP investigations. The U.S. All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) explains that many cases remain unidentified because available sensors or observations did not collect enough information for a positive attribution. Why missing information is not positive evidence
One of the most common reasoning errors in UFO discussions is treating an absence of explanation as evidence for a preferred explanation.
If a witness hears an unusual low-frequency hum at night but there is:
- no recording,
- no confirmed location,
- no reliable estimate of distance,
- no independent witnesses,
- no visual documentation, and
- no environmental measurements,
then investigators have little objective information to analyse. The report may honestly remain unexplained, but the unexplained status reflects missing evidence rather than unusual evidence.
This is an example of the logical distinction between:
- “We do not know what caused it.”
- “Therefore it was an extraordinary craft.”
The second statement does not follow from the first. In logic, the absence of a known explanation is not itself proof that an extraordinary explanation is correct.

Why sound alone often leaves cases unresolved
Sound is one of the weakest forms of evidence for identifying an unknown aerial object.
Unlike calibrated radar or precisely timed video, human hearing provides limited information about:
- exact distance,
- true direction,
- altitude,
- object size,
- speed,
- whether multiple sounds are coming from different sources.
Low-frequency sounds are especially difficult because they travel long distances, reflect from terrain and buildings, and may appear to originate somewhere other than their true source.
Night-time conditions further reduce confidence. Without visual reference points, listeners may unintentionally combine unrelated events into a single narrative—for example, associating a distant mechanical hum with an unrelated light in the sky.
None of these limitations imply that witnesses are dishonest. Rather, they illustrate why sincere observations may still be insufficient to support firm conclusions.
An unresolved report is not evidence of hidden technology
Public discussion sometimes assumes that every unresolved UFO report represents evidence withheld from science.
Investigative practice takes a different view.
Current UAP investigations typically maintain unresolved cases in active files until additional information becomes available. New photographs, radar tracks, weather records or other sensor data may later allow a previously unidentified report to be attributed to an ordinary source. AARO has stated that many archived reports lack sufficient scientific data for analysis and may be revisited if better evidence emerges. This demonstrates an important principle: some reports remain unidentified not because they display extraordinary characteristics, but because investigators lack enough reliable information to identify them confidently.
What would justify a stronger conclusion?
An unexplained sound would become significantly more persuasive only if it were supported by multiple independent forms of evidence pointing towards the same event.
Examples include:
- synchronised audio recorded on calibrated equipment;
- high-quality video from several viewpoints;
- radar observations consistent with the recorded sound;
- precise timing allowing comparison with aircraft and weather data;
- independent witnesses reporting matching details without influencing one another;
- elimination of known environmental and technological sources through systematic investigation.
Even then, investigators would first test conventional explanations before concluding that the phenomenon represented something genuinely anomalous.
Modern scientific proposals for studying UAP therefore emphasise multi-sensor observation rather than relying on witness testimony alone. When a reported UFO sound cannot be explained, the most defensible conclusion is often simply that the available evidence is insufficient.
