Introduction

People have reported unusual sounds in connection with UFO sightings for decades, but there is no recognised acoustic signature that consistently distinguishes one report from another. Witnesses have described everything from faint electrical humming and buzzing to roaring, crackling, whistling and complete silence. Even within the largest historical collections of reports, no single sound appears often enough to qualify as a defining characteristic.

Overview image for Sound Reports

This variability is important because it limits the evidential value of sound descriptions alone. While recurring themes do exist, they are broad and often resemble familiar environmental or mechanical noises. Investigators therefore treat reported sounds as one observational detail among many, rather than as reliable indicators of an unidentified aerial phenomenon.

The Most Common Sound Descriptions

Across historical UFO catalogues and witness databases, several broad categories recur more frequently than others.

  • Low-frequency humming: Often compared with an electrical transformer, power station, or large generator. This is one of the most frequently mentioned sounds in specialised historical datasets involving close encounters and reported physical effects.[Center for UFO Studies]cufos.orgUFO REPORTS INVOLVING VEHICLE INTERFERENCECenter for UFO StudiesUFO REPORTSNovember 3, 2025…Published: November 3, 2025
  • Buzzing: Frequently likened to high-voltage equipment, bees, or an electric motor. Buzzing commonly appears in reports describing apparently hovering objects.[BUFORA]bufora.org.ukBUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORABUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORA
  • Whining or whirring: Witnesses sometimes compare the sound to a turbine, spinning machinery or a jet engine operating at low power rather than full thrust.[BUFORA]bufora.org.ukBUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORABUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORA
  • Whooshing or swishing: Usually associated with reports in which an object appeared to move rapidly overhead or depart suddenly.[BUFORA]bufora.org.ukBUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORABUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORA
  • Crackling or sizzling: Less commonly reported, these descriptions are often compared with electrical discharge or static.[BUFORA]bufora.org.ukBUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORABUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORA
  • Roaring: A minority of witnesses describe loud engine-like or rushing sounds, although these reports are much less common than humming or buzzing.[Center for UFO Studies]cufos.orgUFO REPORTS INVOLVING VEHICLE INTERFERENCECenter for UFO StudiesUFO REPORTSNovember 3, 2025…Published: November 3, 2025
  • Silence: One of the most striking recurring observations is that many witnesses report hearing nothing at all, even when they believe the object was relatively close. BUFORA estimates that roughly four out of five reported UFOs are described as silent.[BUFORA]bufora.org.ukBUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORABUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORA

Although these descriptions recur, they overlap heavily with the sounds produced by aircraft, helicopters, drones, industrial equipment, weather phenomena and other familiar sources.

How Reports Differ Across Witnesses

The diversity of reported sounds is one of the strongest patterns in the literature.

Several factors contribute to this variation:

  • Different estimated distances. An object perceived as nearby may actually be much farther away, altering how—or whether—its sound reaches the observer.
  • Changing environmental conditions. Wind direction, humidity, terrain and urban background noise all influence what listeners hear.
  • Different phases of an event. Some witnesses report sounds only during approach or departure, while others hear nothing during the main observation.
  • Individual comparison language. Witnesses typically describe unfamiliar sounds by comparing them with everyday experiences, producing descriptions such as “like a transformer”, “like bees”, “like a jet”, or “like electricity” even if they heard broadly similar noises.

Because eyewitnesses rarely have instruments to measure frequency, loudness or duration, most reports rely on subjective comparisons rather than objective acoustic data.

Why No Single Pattern Dominates

The strongest conclusion from historical collections is not that one sound repeats consistently, but that no sound does.

One frequently cited analysis of UFO reports involving alleged vehicle interference classified reported sounds using witnesses’ own words. Humming was the largest category, accounting for 34 of 90 sound reports (38% of reported sounds), followed by whining (17%), while buzzing, whooshing, whistling, sizzling and roaring all occurred less frequently. Importantly, the researchers concluded that humming appeared in only a small minority of the total cases examined and that no single sound could be regarded as typical of UFO events.[Center for UFO Studies]cufos.orgUFO REPORTS INVOLVING VEHICLE INTERFERENCECenter for UFO StudiesUFO REPORTSNovember 3, 2025…Published: November 3, 2025

BUFORA reaches a similar conclusion from a broader perspective. Its guide notes that most reported UFOs are described as noiseless, while only around one in five are said to emit buzzing, humming, cracking, roaring, swishing, whirring or whining sounds.[BUFORA]bufora.org.ukBUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORABUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORA

Taken together, these independent summaries point to the same overall pattern: reported sounds are diverse, inconsistent and often absent altogether.

What Silence Tells Investigators

Reports of silence deserve separate attention because they occur so frequently.

Witnesses sometimes describe apparently large or fast-moving objects that produce no obvious engine noise or sonic boom. This observation has encouraged speculation about unconventional propulsion, but silence alone is not considered evidence for extraordinary technology. Investigators instead consider several ordinary possibilities, including inaccurate distance estimates, atmospheric effects, wind direction, and the fact that many observations occur at night when judging scale is particularly difficult.[BUFORA]bufora.org.ukBUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORABUFORAGUIDE TO UFOS | BUFORA

From an investigative standpoint, silence functions much like any other witness observation: it is documented carefully but interpreted cautiously alongside visual, environmental and contextual evidence.

What the Overall Pattern Suggests

Looking across decades of reports, the common pattern is not a unique acoustic fingerprint but a limited set of recurring descriptions centred on humming, buzzing, whining and silence. These themes appear often enough to be noteworthy but not consistently enough to identify a genuine “UFO sound.”

For that reason, researchers generally avoid treating reported noises as diagnostic evidence. Instead, sound descriptions are most useful when combined with other independently verifiable information such as radar data, multiple witnesses, photographs, environmental conditions or confirmed aircraft activity. On their own, the reported sounds remain too varied, subjective and inconsistent to define a reliable acoustic signature for unidentified aerial phenomena.
