Introduction

For centuries, people around New York’s Seneca Lake have reported sudden cannon-like explosions known as the Seneca Guns. While shallow earthquakes and atmospheric phenomena remain possible explanations for some mysterious booms, a growing body of geological evidence has revived an older idea: that methane and other gases trapped beneath the lakebed may occasionally escape in violent bursts. The hypothesis has gained attention because recent surveys have revealed numerous large craters on the floor of Seneca Lake together with evidence of gas-rich sediments. Even so, researchers emphasise that this mechanism is unlikely to account for every reported Seneca Gun. Instead, it may explain a specific subset of events in a phenomenon that probably has more than one natural cause.[U.S. Geological Survey]usgs.govOpen source on usgs.gov.

What researchers found on the lakebed

The gas-burst hypothesis moved beyond speculation after high-resolution sonar surveys of Seneca Lake revealed an unexpectedly rugged lake floor. Researchers identified more than one hundred large circular depressions, or pockmarks, many measuring roughly 120 metres across and around 9 metres deep. These features resemble gas-expulsion craters found in other aquatic environments.[Popular Mechanics]popularmechanics.comPopular Mechanics Massive Booms Shook the East Coast for over 300 YearsScientists Finally Found the Source of the Sonic Explosions. For over 300 years, mysterious booming sounds—known locally as the "Seneca Gu…

Follow-up sampling strengthened the case that gas is involved. Sediment and water collected from deep parts of the lake contained methane together with other naturally occurring gases. These findings suggest that organic material buried beneath the lakebed continues to generate gas, which can accumulate below relatively impermeable sediment layers before eventually escaping.[Popular Mechanics]popularmechanics.comPopular Mechanics Massive Booms Shook the East Coast for over 300 YearsScientists Finally Found the Source of the Sonic Explosions. For over 300 years, mysterious booming sounds—known locally as the "Seneca Gu…

The idea itself is not entirely new. As early as the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, geologists proposed that natural gas escaping through the lake might be responsible for the mysterious sounds. At the time, however, they lacked the underwater mapping technology and sampling techniques needed to test the hypothesis directly. Recent surveys have provided the first substantial physical evidence consistent with those earlier suggestions.[Popular Mechanics]popularmechanics.comPopular Mechanics Massive Booms Shook the East Coast for over 300 YearsScientists Finally Found the Source of the Sonic Explosions. For over 300 years, mysterious booming sounds—known locally as the "Seneca Gu…

How trapped gas could produce a surface blast

Methane forms naturally when microorganisms break down organic matter in oxygen-poor sediments. In deep lakes such as Seneca, this gas can become trapped beneath compact sediment layers for long periods.

If pressure builds sufficiently, the sediment cap may fail suddenly. A large bubble would then rise rapidly through hundreds of metres of water before bursting at the surface. Researchers proposing the hypothesis argue that such an eruption could generate a pressure wave perceived as a loud boom, particularly because Seneca Lake is exceptionally deep and capable of transmitting low-frequency sound efficiently.[Popular Mechanics]popularmechanics.comPopular Mechanics Massive Booms Shook the East Coast for over 300 YearsScientists Finally Found the Source of the Sonic Explosions. For over 300 years, mysterious booming sounds—known locally as the "Seneca Gu…

Studies of methane release in other lakes show that bubbling is often highly episodic rather than continuous. Changes in water pressure, seasonal conditions and sediment stability can all influence when gas is released. That behaviour is consistent with the irregular timing of many historical Seneca Gun reports, which sometimes occur after long quiet periods.[U.S. Geological Survey]usgs.govOpen source on usgs.gov.

The cratered lake floor also fits this mechanism. Repeated episodes of gas escape can disturb sediments and leave circular depressions, although the precise processes involved vary between lakes and geological settings. Similar-looking pockmarks elsewhere have been linked to fluid escape, while others have later proved to have different origins, illustrating why the features alone are not conclusive evidence of methane eruptions.[U.S. Geological Survey]usgs.govOpen source on usgs.gov.

Why the idea cannot explain every Seneca Gun

Despite the intriguing evidence, the methane explanation remains a working hypothesis rather than a settled conclusion.

One limitation is historical geography. Reports described as Seneca Guns have been recorded not only around Seneca Lake but also along parts of the Atlantic coast and in other regions with no obvious connection to methane-rich lake sediments. Those cases almost certainly require different explanations.[U.S. Geological Survey]usgs.govOpen source on usgs.gov.

Even around Seneca Lake, researchers have not yet directly recorded a large methane eruption occurring simultaneously with a characteristic boom. The physical evidence indicates that gas exists beneath the lake and that large craters are present, but capturing an actual eruption together with acoustic and seismic measurements remains an important missing piece. That gap has motivated new monitoring efforts designed to detect both shallow seismic activity and possible gas-related events.[fdsn.org]fdsn.orgYA 2026YA (2026-2027): Seneca Drums Pilot Project…

Scientists also caution against assuming that every pockmark necessarily formed through methane explosions. Studies from other regions demonstrate that superficially similar depressions can result from underwater sediment flows rather than escaping gas. Consequently, each lake must be evaluated using its own geological evidence rather than by analogy alone.[U.S. Geological Survey]usgs.govOpen source on usgs.gov.

What the hypothesis means for understanding Seneca Lake booms

The lakebed gas hypothesis is important because it offers a location-specific mechanism supported by tangible geological observations rather than folklore alone. Instead of treating the Seneca Guns as entirely mysterious—or attributing them to aircraft, UFOs or other extraordinary causes—it points investigators toward measurable natural processes beneath the lake.

At the same time, the evidence argues for caution rather than certainty. The presence of methane, gas-rich sediments and large lakebed craters makes gas eruptions a plausible explanation for some historic cannon-like reports at Seneca Lake. However, until researchers directly observe a gas release producing the characteristic sound, the hypothesis remains one of several scientifically credible explanations. In the broader context of unexplained booming noises, Seneca Lake appears increasingly likely to represent a combination of local geological processes rather than a single phenomenon with a single cause.[usgs.gov]usgs.govOpen source on usgs.gov.
