Why silence seems so unusual

People intuitively associate flight with sound. Helicopters generate distinctive rotor noise, propeller aircraft create a persistent engine note, and jet aircraft produce both engine roar and, at high speed, sonic booms. Even relatively quiet electric drones emit audible propeller sounds at modest distances.

Against this background, reports of apparently silent objects stand out because witnesses often claim one or more of the following:

  • The object appeared low overhead.
  • It seemed large enough that conventional aircraft would have been clearly audible.
  • It accelerated or changed direction abruptly.
  • It departed without any increase in sound.

The paradox therefore depends on the witness’s estimate of distance, size and speed. If any of those estimates are inaccurate—as can easily happen when observing an unfamiliar object against a dark or featureless sky—the expectation of noise may also be incorrect.

Why eyewitnesses may hear nothing

Silence has several possible explanations that do not require an unconventional aircraft.

Distance is often misjudged

Without reliable visual references, people frequently underestimate how far away lights in the sky actually are. A bright aircraft, satellite flare, atmospheric phenomenon or drone may appear much closer than it really is.

If an object is kilometres away rather than hundreds of metres away, little or no sound may reach an observer.

Sound and light do not arrive together

Light reaches an observer almost instantly, whereas sound travels through air at roughly 343 metres per second under normal conditions.

An aircraft producing a loud sound may therefore be seen first, with the sound arriving several seconds later. If the object changes direction, disappears behind terrain or leaves the observer’s field of view before the sound arrives, the experience may be remembered as silent.

Atmospheric conditions can suppress sound

Temperature inversions, wind direction, humidity and terrain can all affect how sound propagates.

Under some conditions, aircraft noise is carried away from an observer rather than towards them. In others, sound is refracted, producing unexpectedly quiet conditions nearby while remaining audible much farther away.

These well-established acoustic effects help explain why observers sometimes report unusually quiet aircraft or explosions.

Expectations influence perception

Witnesses concentrating on an unexpected visual event may not notice background sounds or may later remember the event differently. Cognitive psychology has shown that memory reconstructs experiences rather than replaying them exactly, particularly during surprising or emotionally significant events.

Recent government investigations illustrate an important distinction between witness description and investigative conclusion.

Some cases published by the U.S. All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) include eyewitness statements that observed lights or orbs were “silent” or that no sound was heard during prolonged observations. What silence can and cannot tell us

Silence is an interesting observational feature, but by itself it has limited evidential value.

It can indicate that:

  • the observer perceived no audible engine or propulsion noise;
  • environmental conditions may have affected sound transmission;
